Not on viewWeb CommentaryIn a letter written to Isabella Stewart Gardner from Cuautla, Mexico, Louise M. Nathurst describes her time in that city with her cousin, painter Denman Ross. The letter details the natural beauty of the area, including the two volcanoes that loom over the city. In describing walking along an ancient bridge, Nathurst notes that she “sit[s] in a sheltered corner because there are bulls that are driven home at sunset that quite upset my nerves. I confess to being an abject coward at such a moment”. Gardner’s friends were just as well-traveled as she was, and frequently wrote to her about their adventures and lives abroad.
