ProvenanceNotesPresumably a gift from John Singer Sargent to Mrs. Henry Brown Fuller (Lucia Fairchild,1872–1924) when his sister, Violet Sargent (1870–1955), was staying with the Fairchild family in Nahant, Massachusetts in the summer of 1890.
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from Mrs. Fuller through Mrs. Charles Platt (Eleanor Hardy, 1869–1953), widow of the painter Dennis Miller Bunker (1861–1890), remarried to the artist and architect Charles Adams Platt (1861–1955), on 8 January 1895 for $500.
