Web CommentaryOkakura Kakuzō (1862-1913) possibly gave this visiting card to Isabella Stewart Gardner during a social visit. In English, the card reads horizontally, from left to right, “Mr. Kakuzō Okakura.” Turning the card ninety degrees clockwise, the card reads from top to bottom in Japanese, “Okakura Kakuzō.” “Okakura” is his family name, while “Kakuzō” is his personal name.
