Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from an unknown dealer in Rome for 3,000 lire by 24 November 1901, through the art historian and archaeologist Richard Norton (1872-1918), who attributed the sculpture to the Bolognese artist Francesco Francia (about 1450-1517).
