Web CommentaryWilliam Amory Gardner, Isabella Stewart Gardner’s nephew, stares flirtatiously at the camera from behind a fan in this photograph of him in a dress. William Amory, called WAG by his family and friends, was a member of Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Club, the oldest theatrical organization in the United States. When the club was reserved exclusively for men, members would take on the roles of women in the shows, as William Amory did in 1884.
