Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner's husband, John L. Gardner, Jr. (1837-1898), from the art dealer Saturnino Innocenti with three additional sculptural pieces (an unidentified tabernacle, marble head, and relief from a sarcophagus) for a total of 4,100 francs on about 1 November 1897.
