Web CommentaryIsabella Stewart Gardner was an avid gardener, particularly at the Gardner family estate in Brookline, Massachusetts, called Green Hill.  Isabella and head gardner Charles Montague Atkinson cultivated plants in several greenhouses and outdoor gardens on the property. They developed one of the earliest collection of bonsai in the United States which are visible, along with jade plants, in this photo.
ProvenanceNotesCommissioned by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the Boston photographic firm Thomas E. Marr and Son in 1905.
