Web CommentaryThis group portrait depicts novelist Henry James’s niece, Alice, in the company of three other costumed women. An inscription on the photograph refers to Margot Asquith, the wife of Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, whose notorious autobiographical writing was recommended to Isabella Stewart Gardner. The photograph was arranged for Isabella Stewart Gardner’s amusement and appears to depict Alice and friends as characters from Mrs. Asquith’s autobiography.
