Web CommentaryShortly after Henry James’s death on 28 February 1916, Isabella Stewart Gardner sent a note of condolence to his surviving family members. This letter from Alice Runnells James, wife of the painter William James, Jr., expresses her thanks for Gardner’s acknowledgment of their loss “of a dear & loving uncle & friend,” and notes that he “always spoke to me admiringly & affectionately of you.”
