Isabella Stewart Gardner owned many childrens’ books—a collection that dated back to her own childhood as well as later acquisitions. This French translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland could have been a book that Isabella shared with her young nephews, who she and her husband Jack adopted in 1875 after the death of their father.
