Gossaert, Jan
(Flemish painter, draftsman, and printmaker, ca. 1472-1532) [500009353]
Note: Painter, draftsman, and printmaker active in the southern Netherlands. His birthplace may have been Maubeuge and his place of death may have been Antwerp. He was one of the earliest exponents of Antwerp mannerism in the period ca. 1500-1510. After traveling to Italy in 1508-1509 in the entourage of the humanist Philip of Burgundy, later Bishop of Utrecht, Gossaert played a noteworthy role in the Netherlands regarding the transition between Late Gothic and 'Romanism,' a northern style based on antique and Italian Renaissance models. Gossaert was also the first Netherlandish artist to paint classically inspired, mythological nudes.
