[no publications in LC database], William D. Ticknor conducting his business without partners until 1843; in 1843 James T. Fields was admitted as a junior active partner, along with John Reed, Jr., as a silent partner, causing the adoption of the new name William D. Ticknor and Company; in 1849 the name was altered to Ticknor, Reed and Fields; in 1854 Reed withdrew and the name was changed to the classic Ticknor and Fields, lasting until the death of Ticknor in 1864)
