LC name authority rec. n80008550

LC Heading: Goncourt, Edmond de, 1822-1896

French author who closely collaborated with his brother Jules on writing projects covering a range of art-related topics. Their important collection of articles, 'L'Art du dix-huitième siècle' (1875), helped to revitalize the reputations of 18th-century French artists such as Watteau. The 'Journal,' which the brothers began to publish in 1851, is a rich depository of information about Paris in the second half of the 19th century. Edmond helped to popularize Japanese art through his books on Utamaro (1891) and Hokusai (1896). Edmond's will left provisions for the Académie Goncourt, a group of ten men or women of letters that award an annual prize (the Prix Goncourt) for outstanding imaginative prose.
