Eva Mary Butts

Butts, Eva Mary, 1875?-1961

Daughter of Lt-Col John George Butts (1840-1891) and Lucy Anna Butts (née Nixon; 1851-1931). Her father was in the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, and came to New Zealand during the "second Maori War" and was stationed in Wanganui. He then served in India, where his daughter Eva Mary Butts (1875?-1961) was born. He returned to New Zealand. Eva Butts ran a small private school in her home in Clifton Tce, Wellington. She was the writer of entertaining reports of social life in Wellington which appeared for many years in the New Zealand Free Lance, and was a founding member of the Wellington Women's Club. She also produced a book "I'm told ... a collection of stories, grave & gay" published by Whitcombes in 1917 (P 820.8 BUTT 1917). She died while on holiday in Christchurch in 1961. Buried in the family plot in Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington. Biographical information from Evening Post (June 1, 1961, p15)
