George Douglas Campbell
George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll in the peerage of Scotland, and 1st Duke of Argyll in the peerage of the United Kingdom (1823-1900), was University Rector from 1854 to 1856.
Born in Ardencapple Castle, Campbell studied briefly at the University of Edinburgh. He became Marquess of Lorne in 1839 and 8th Duke of Argyll on his father's death in 1847.
The Duke sat in the House of Lords and held various offices, including that of Secretary of State for India from 1868 to 1874. He wrote extensively on matters relating to geology, religion and politics and was Chancellor of the University of St Andrews from 1851 until his death.
In 1854 the Duke comprehensively defeated Benjamin Disraeli in the vote to choose the University's rector.
