The Lord family of Hanover, NH included Nathan Lord (1792-1870), Reverend Doctor and sixth president of Dartmouth College; his wife, Elizabeth King Leland (1792-1870), daughter of Joseph and Dorcas Leland of Saco, Maine, sister of Dorcas Leland; and Nathan and Elizabeth’s children and grandchildren. Nathan Lord was born on November 28, 1792 in South Berwick, Maine. He attended Bowdoin College and Andover Theological Seminary, graduating in 1815. He served as pastor of the Congregational Church in Amherst, NH before becoming president of Dartmouth College in 1828. Lord was president of Dartmouth College for 35 years before resigning in 1863 due to the controversy surrounding his pro-slavery beliefs. He lived out the rest of his life in Hanover, NH and died in 1870, the same year as his wife, Elizabeth. Nathan and Elizabeth had ten children: John King Lord (1819-1849), Dartmouth College (DC) class of 1863, minister, who married Laura Smith Lord (1822-1868); Joseph Leland Lord (1820-1874), DC class of 1839, lawyer, who married Julia Kilham Lord (1825-1912); Frederic Richardson Lord (1822-1873), DC class of 1842, school principal; Samuel Augustus Lord (1822-1862), DC class of 1843, physician, who married Elizabeth Daniels; William Hayes Lord (1824-1877), DC class of 1843, pastor in Vermont, who married Henrietta (Hattie) Aiken Lord (d. 1886); Henry Clark Lord (1825-1884), DC class of 1843, lawyer in Ohio; Mary Lord Palmer (1827-1909), who married George Palmer, DC class of 1845, lawyer; Nathan Lord Jr., (1831-1885), DC class of 1851, Col. 6th Regiment of Vermont Volunteers; Francis (Frank) Brown Lord (1833-1873), DC class of 1856, who married Catherine (Katie) Cox Lord; and Sarah (Sadie) Lord Moody (1835-1875), who married Andrew Moody (d. 1880). The third generation of the Lord family included: John King Lord (1848-1926), son of John and Laura, DC class of 1868, professor of Latin and trustee of Dartmouth College, who married Emma Pomeroy Lord (1848-1931); Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lord Condit (1846-1939); and their cousin, Elizabeth (Bessie) Moody Fairbanks (1867-1939), daughter of Sadie and Andrew, who married Arthur Fairbanks (1864-1944), DC class of 1886, teacher and art director. The fourth generation of the Lord family included the children of John and Emma: Laura Lord Scales (1879-1990), Dean of Students at Smith College; Frederick Pomeroy Lord (1876-1970), DC class of 1898, professor of Anatomy, who married Jeannette Mather Lord (circa 1877-1970); and Arthur Hardy Lord (1889- 1989), DC class of 1910, publisher in Boston. Also included their cousin, Mary Lord Fairbanks (1890-1955), Boston based artist and daughter of Bessie and Arthur.
