Mary Smyth Hunter (1856-1933), born in India, married the wealthy coal-mining heir Charles Hunter in 1875. Mary was known for her lavish hospitality at Hill Hall, their country house, and for her patronage of musicians, writers, and artists, including John Singer Sargent and Auguste Rodin.
