Personal Data

Charles Greely Loring was born on October 23, 1881, in Prides Crossing, the son of Charles Greely Loring and his wife, Mary J. Hopkins (daughter of John Hopkins).

He married on August 4, 1915, in the Chapel Royal of St. James’s Palace in London, to Katharine Alice Page (b. 4Jan1891 in New Rochelle NY; d. 1956 in Concord MA), daughter of Walter Hines Page (who was US Ambassador to the Court of St. James) and his wife, Willia Alice Wilson.

Charles Loring died on September 3, 1966, in Concord, Massachusetts. [Note that his tombstone at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery indicates that he was born in 1881 and died in 1967; his correct date of birth, however, was September 3, 1966.]

Career

Charles Loring graduated from Harvard in 1903 and from MIT in 1906. After serving in the offices of Guy Lowell, he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In August of 1912, he opened his own office in Boston, and in July of 1913 he joined in partnership with Joseph Daniels Leland, III, in the firm of Loring and Leland. The partnership dissolved in April of 1919. Charles Loring continued as a sole practitioner in Boston.

Among Loring and Leland’s works were the Waltham Public Library and the Carter Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.
