The Montross Gallery, named after the first director Newman Emerson Montross (1849-1932), opened in 1878 and closed in 1942. John Quinn, Lizzie Bliss and Charles Freer were among the galleries many clients.

The art gallery had several locations in New York City—the last being 550 5th Avenue, New York, N.Y.
