Josua Phippen

Joshua Phippen, the son of Joshua and Eunice (Daniels) Phippen was born on October 22, 1857 in Salem, Massachusetts, where he received his education.

Upon his marriage to Addie Greely of Winchester, Massachusetts, in 1891, he moved to that town and resided there for the rest of his life. Phippen studied piano with B[enjamin] J[ohnson] Lang, and for many years played both the piano and organ professionally, being a church organist who played at several churches in Winchester.

Phippen composed as well as played, having many compositions to his credit. A piano concerto he composed in the 1890s was awarded first prize in a New York competition as the best in the country. From 1879 to 1939 he served as curator of music at the Essex Institute, and at the time of his death was honorary curator. Joshua Phippen died at the age of 98 in Arlington, Massachusetts, on August 3, 1955.
