David Stewart

David was born in 1810 in Jamaica, Queens, Long Island, New York.

He married Adelia Smith in 1839.

David became a clerk in a drygoods store on Fulton St, New York City, when a young man. After he had been in this store for a few years, he became a clerk in the banking house of Russell & Co. He remained with Russell & Co. for many years, and then with Thomas Paton, he formed the firm of Stewart & Paton, importers of Scotch and Irish linens. In this business he remained for forty years, and made a fortune. When he gave up the importing business he became connected with banking, iron and coal interests, being at the time of his death president of the American Coal Company at No. 1 Broadway.

Mr. Stewart was a trustee of Grace Church, of which he had been a member for many years. He also was a member of the Knickerbocker Club. Mr. Stewart had been suffering for a number of years from kidney troubles, and this, combined with old age, was the cause of his death. His second wife survives him; also a daughter by his first wife, who died about six years ago. [1]

He passed away in 1891 at Hotel Champlain, Clinton County, NY, at age 80 and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County (Brooklyn), New York, USA. [2]
