historical notes Frederick Keppel & Co. was a firm founded in 1868, and while having its roots in book dealing, dealt in prints and paintings.

William Macbeth (1851-1917) began his career as a stock boy and worked his way to partner of Frederick Keppel & Co. before establishing his own gallery in 1892, Macbeth Gallery, specializing in American Art.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art Curator of Drawings, Carl Zigrosser (1891-1975), was first employed by Frederick Keppel & Co., before establishing the Weyhe Gallery in 1919, branch of E. Weyhe Inc. (the bookstore), and beginning his career as a curator on 1940.

In 1940, the firm merged with Arthur Harlow & Co. (est. 1911) to form Harlow, Keppel & Co and was located at 670 5th Avenue.
