Plimpton in Boston; moved to Norwood, Mass., 1897; by 1920 the bindery part of the plant was capable of producing 50,000 v. daily; by 1936 employed over 600 men and women; produced textbooks but expanded into religious books, fiction, and deluxe editions; by 1950s had over 1200 employees; in 1924 opened subsidiary plant in LaPorte, Ind.; purchased by McCall Printing Co. [no publs. in LC data base] in 1964 and in 1970 by Murray Traub Acquiring Corp. [no publs. in LC data base] which ran it until it closed Oct. 1973)

Plimpton estab. a company called Security Manufacturing Company on site of what would become Plimpton Press; name Holliston Mills adopted in 1895; engaged in the making of bookbinding glue as an adjunct to next-door press company; by 1900 company began making bookbinding cloth which would become its primary product; in 1920 Holliston Mills was formally incorporated as a separate company from its parent, Plimpton Press; later Holliston Mills plants were built in Tenn.)
