Dominic Ellis Colnaghi
British Consul in Cyprus in 1864-1865 who excavated and collected antiquities, mainly around Larnaca (ancient Kition) which were donated to the British Museum in 1866 (GR 1866,1-1.1-358).
Born in the 1834 into the well-known London family of print-makers and art dealers, Colnaghi did not enter the family firm but instead accompanied Charles Newton (q.v.) to the Aegean as his secretary and travel companion. As a result he entered the British diplomatic corps and served in numerous locations around the Mediterranean, accounts of which can be found in published and archival form. After Cyprus, Colnaghi was transferred to Turin and then moved to Florence where he served as British Consul General for many years.
