Inhabited by Iron Age peoples, Romans and Saxons; crossed by Roman roads and many railways, due to strategic location on Thames river and proximity to London; cities developed during Industrial Revolution; area is known for its breed of black and white pig; Berkshire County Council abolished in 1998 although Berkshire is sometimes still referred to as a county; broken into six unitary authorities: Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Reading, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham.
