Located on the eastern bank of the Exe estuary where the River Clyst joins it; flourished as a port in the 14th and 15th centuries, trading vigorously with the Dutch; shipbuilding and repair became the main industries after the Exeter Ship Canal was built in the 16th century; these industries also later declined.
