Located in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain, on the Mediterranean coast. The province is primarily agricultural, cultivating olives, grapes, fruits and vegetables in lowlands, along the shore, and in fertile interior valleys. Mineral deposits in mountains include iron and lead and salt mines is found in the north. The main rivers in Málaga are the Guadalhorce and Guadiaro. Historically important sites include the Menga, Viera, Nerja, and El Romeral caves which contain prehistoric cave paintings and relics.
