Ceremonial county in northwestern England. Geologically comprises fragmented areas of clay, sand and gravel, dotted with rivers and small lakes. Site of ancient hill forts on mid-Cheshire ridge during Bronze and Iron Ages; famous for cheese and well-preserved half-timbered houses.
