The town was one of the nineteen communes that made up Greater Brussels in the region of Brussels in Belgium. It was an important medieval center. The modern town is an industrial suburb of Brussels; noted for the former Cistercian Abbey founded in 1201, that now houses the National Geographic Institute and the Institute of Architecture and Decorative Art. It hosts industries such as chemical and textile production and the processing of metals.
