Predominantly inhabited by Tatars until they were expelled because of alleged collaboration with Nazis in 1945; products include winter wheat, corn, sunflowers, tobacco, and wine; limestone and diorite are quarried; iron ore is mined at Kerč'. In March of 2014, a referendum was voted upon in Crimea to secede from the Ukraine and rejoin Russia. This vote was contested by the European Union and the United States.
