Thesaurus

Located on spur of Monte Subasio; was home to Umbrians (an Italic tribe) & Etruscans; later settled by Romans; site of feud of Dukes of Spoleto in Middle Ages; was independent commune in 12th cen., later part of the Papal States. Noted for large church and relics of St. Francis of Assisi. Was named UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
