Located on the River Dee; Roman camp of Deva; amphitheatre and ramparts remain; after Romans departed ca. 380, occupied by Danes and Saxons; important under Mercian kings in the 10th century; last town to surrender to William the Conqueror in 1070; medieval galleried streets; Tudor houses; a cathedral and castle; port was important 13th-14th centuries but declined with growth of Liverpool.
