Located on the Inn River, 85 m. SW of Salzburg, it has been strategically important since antiquity because of its position on the trade routes at the N end of the Brenner Pass. It was established as a fortified settlement in 1180 and was under Hapsburg rule from 1363 to 1918. Residence of Dukes of Tirol, ceded to Bavaria by Napoleon in 1806, and liberated in 1809. Noted for its Golden Roof of the duke's palace and the Imperial Church where Emperor Maxmilian II is buried. Host city to the Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976.
