Located in southeastern England, north of Greater London; drained by rivers Lea and Colne. It contains Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman remains, a Norman castle, and many large country estates; expanded greatly in the 20th century to accomodate population and industrial overflow from London. The county is divided into ten districts.
