The western German city of Neuwied is situated on the Rhine river some seven miles north northwest of Koblenz. The Romans created a military post here, but that settlement did not continue. It passed to the duchy of Nassau in 1806, then to Prussia in 1815. Its historic architecture includes a 18th-century Baroque castle, and the Roman military camp is being excavated. The economic activities of the modern city include engineering, the manufacture of cement, pumice building materials, chemicals, wood products, and rolled metal. The 2005 population was calculated at 66,901.
