Located on Bay of Naples; probably was an early settlement of Greeks, Etruscans, or Pelasgians; Greek and Oscan tombs have also been found outside the city. According to tradition, it had ancient ties to Lipari. Was popular as a resort by Roman times. In antiquity, Surrentum was famous for its wine, its fish, and its red Campanian vases. It was birthplace of poet Torquato Tasso (born 1544).
