Deventer
Probably Carolingian in origin, it grew up in the 8th century around a chapel established by St. Libuinus. Was an important trading center and was granted a charter in 1230. Became famous as an intellectual and printing center from the 14th to the 16 century; Erasmus of Rotterdam spent some time here at the chapter school. Noted for its dried cod and annual fairs for carpets, tapestries and honey cakes (Deventerkoek).
