Not on viewWeb CommentaryIsabella Stewart Gardner and painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) were close friends for decades. The two exchanged many letters, and almost two hundred of Sargent’s letters are preserved in the Museum archives. In this letter from the summer of 1916, Sargent writes from “Camping Somewhere in the Yoho Valley, British Columbia” where he was on one of his habitual sketching trips. Despite his remote location in the Canadian wilderness, Sargent dedicates most of this letter to a single subject: flamenco records that he suggests Gardner purchase.
