Web Commentary
This program is from the first meeting of the Manuscript Club, a social music club whose first meeting was held at Isabella Stewart Gardner’s home at 152 Beacon Street. Venues like the Manuscript Club were excellent opportunities for female composers, such as Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1962), to promote their work. Lang’s signature can be found on the second page of this program, alongside other prominent Boston musicians like Clayton Johns.
