BiographySpottiswoode & Co. was a printing company in London. The Spottiswoode Press was invented by Andrew Spottiswoode. It was operated by steam and printed two forms at the same time, which passed alternately under the platen, producing an average of 700 impressions of each form per hour. The company was appointed printer for Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in 1845. By 1850 it was one of the largest printing firms in London, with a printing works in Shacklewell employing over 200 men.
