He was one of the earliest exponents of Antwerp mannerism in the period ca. 1500-1510. After traveling to Italy in 1508-1509 in the entourage of the humanist Philip of Burgundy, later Bishop of Utrecht, Gossaert played a noteworthy role in the Netherlands regarding the transition between Late Gothic and 'Romanism,' a northern style based on antique and Italian Renaissance models. Gossaert was also the first Netherlandish artist to paint classically inspired, mythological nudes.
