Danish antiquary and archaeologist
Born in Vejle, he was assistant to Christian Jörgensen Thomsen at the National Museum in Copenhagen (1838-43), inspector of monuments (1847) and director from 1865. In 1842-54 he made repeated visits to Europe and the rest of Scandinavia on archaeological expeditions, and pioneered palaeobotany with his study of vegetation changes in peat-bogs. His major published work was Danmarks Oldtid (1843, Eng trans The Primeval Antiquities of Denmark, 1849), and he also wrote The Danes and Norwegians in England (1852). He was Minister of Education from 1874 to 1875.
