STAAL, Gustave or Pierre Gustave Eugène
French, 19th century, male.
Born 2 September 1817, in Vertus (Marne); died 19 October 1882, in Ivry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne).
Painter, draughtsman, pastellist, engraver (burin), lithographer. Mythological subjects, portraits.
A pupil of Paul Delaroche, Gustave Staal was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts on 7 April 1838. He exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1872 and was a regular contributor to the Magasin Pittoresque.
