John Player
active London, 1665 - 1708
"John Player has left 10 or 11 signed instruments, the first an English virginal dated 1664 (Cobbe Collection, Surrey, England), and the remainder all spinets. In addition, I have attributed the harpsichord measured in the Talbot Manuscript (OCH Mus MS 1187) as being his work, and a letter formerly preserved with the 1700 Tisseran harpsichord (now in the Bate Collection, Oxford) mentiones a double manual harpsichord by Player, now lost from sight. I have also attributed an unsigned spinet in the Russel Collection, Edinburgh to Player, on the basis of many of the features which are also in common to this instrument. I have access to interior views of the Russell Collection instrument which was the final factor in that attribution."
