Urban de Gheldof, Giuseppe Marino
Born in Padua in 1856 and died in Montelupo Fiorentino in 1908, he was a scholar and a prominent figure in Venetian lagoon archeology of the second half of the nineteenth century, contributing with his excavations in the realtina area (Rialto) at the meeting point of an interesting series of finds dating from prehistoric to modern times, which later donated to the Museum of Torcello. Based on his discoveries, he stated that the first settlements in the area date back to the early Iron Age. In addition to archeology he also interested in ancient ceramics, to whom he dedicated some of his publications: Ceramica Vicentina, in "Ateneo Veneto", v. 11, pt. 2. 1876; Around some majolica and porcelain factories in Bassano and in Angarano, Venice, F. Ongania succ. Munster, 1876; The manufacture of majolica and porcelain in Este, Venice, Tip. of Time, 1876; Studies around Venetian Ceramics, Venice, P. Naratovich, 1876; The ceramics in Padova notes, Padua, Stab. Tip. Prosperini, 1888. He also took part in the study of other so-called minor arts such as Lace, to which he dedicated a few publications (La merlette in Venice, Venice, F. Ongania, 1877; Technical Historical Contract for the Making of Venetian Lace, Venice, Ferd Ongania Editore, 1878), tapestries (Tapestries in Venice with notes on Venetian art fabrics, Venice, F.
