Benedetto Montagna
about 1480 - 1556-1558, Vicenza, Italy
Italian, 16th century, male.
Active in Vicenza.
Born c. 1481; died before 4 April 1558.
Painter, engraver (burin). Religious subjects, genre scenes.
Vicenza School.
Son and pupil of Bartolommeo Montagna, and very probably his assistant, Benedetto Montagna was a master in the Vicenza guild in 1490. He seems to have signed his paintings only after his father's death in 1523. Two of his paintings are in Vicenza Cathedral, Virgin and the Child Jesus between Two Saints and Trinity with the Virgin and St John the Baptist.
As an engraver Montagna produced a considerable number of works; Bartsch lists 35 plates on religious and genre subjects. Some are signed Benedeto.Montegna, others with the initials B.M.
