Note: Founded in London, 1763. Auction house founded in London by James Christie (1730–1803). At various times Christie took partners into the firm: from January 1777 to October 1784 it became Christie & Ansell, and from February to May 1797 it was Christie, Sharp & Harper. By the 21st century Christie’s had established a global presence, with 53 offices in 32 countries and 12 salerooms around the world including in London, New York, Paris, Geneva, Milan, Amsterdam, Dubai, Zurich, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Mumbai. Christie’s also led the market with expanded initiatives in growth markets such as Russia, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, with successful sales and exhibitions in Beijing, Mumbai, and Dubai. Offering around 450 auctions annually in over 80 categories, Christie’s sales include all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewellery, photographs, collectables, wine, and more.
