BiographyFounder of the Aldine Press, he is considered the most important printer and publisher of his time, producing many of the first printed editions of Greek and Latin classics. He developed what is considered the precursor to the modern small-format and inexpensive paperback book.

Editore e tipografo attivo a Venezia. N. a Bassiano presso Latina probabilmente nel 1452, dopo aver studiato a Roma e a Ferrara divenne precettore di Alberto e Lionello Pio a Carpi. Trasferitosi a Venezia, costituì una società tipografico-editoriale con Pietro Francesco Barbarigo e Andrea Torresano il vecchio, attiva fino alla morte di Barbarigo. Lavorò dapprima a casa propria, in piazza Sant'Agostino, poi in quella dei Torresano, presso la chiesa di San Paterniano. Sposò Maria, figlia di Andrea Torresano, e ne ebbe tre figli, Marco Manuzio, Antonio e Paolo, e due figlie, Alda e Letizia. M. il 6.2.1515. Fu il primo tipografo ad usare i caratteri italici e i formati in 8°, e promosse accurate edizioni critiche dei classici latini e greci.
