Willis & Sotheran (British; 1856 - 1866; dates of firm)
Booksellers. George Willis is first recorded in Leicester Square in 1836, and there is a separate entry for his sole activity. In 1856 he merged with the younger Thomas Sotheran: this entry refers to their partnership between 1856-66. The Sotheran firm goes back to a Thomas Sotheran, who moved to London from York c.1812; he later traded as Thomas Sotheran & Son, and it was presumably this son (Henry) who entered into partnership with George Willis and after 1866 continued the business on his own (see entry for Henry Sotheran).
