BiographyAlexander [Alex] A. Blum was born in Hungary in 1888 and became a versatile American painter, etcher, illustrator and comic book artist. Blum studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and at the Art Students’ League of New York. During the 1920’s and 1930’s his art was included in many major exhibitions in Washington, Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia and Boston. After 1940 most of Blum’s artistic work was in the field of illustration, most particularly for comic books. Among other museums, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts owns an extensive collection of Blum’s etchings and paintings. A complete listing of his illustrations for comic books will be found at the Michigan State University Libraries, Reading Room Index to the Comic Art Collection. {Some sources state that the artist’s middle name was Aladar while others claim that it was Anthony.}
